Option 01 - Artificial Lighting
Definition:
Artificial light, as opposed to natural light, refers to any light source that is produced by electrical means.
Multiple lights used and this reminds me of bubbles when they are blown.
This used street lights and has made the whole photo out of focus. However this adds to the photo as you are still about to determine what it is of.
Natural light - the light from the sun : sunlight indoor photographs made in natural light.
This uses the Sun to create an outline the animal, allow the viewer to observe all its features in order to work out what it is.
Uses the trees in order to create streaming light. This is difficult to do as the Sun has to be in the correct place and you have to take the photo at the correct time.

For this component I wanted a theme and by doing the mind map I worked out that there were a lot of similar things that I could do that had the same overall effect. Therefore I started to think about the theme as I made the mind map. So the idea of using candles was a strong one as there is a lot of different ideas that I could use for it and I really liked the idea of using fire to highlight certain things. As well as this it also provides an idea for a physical experiment where by I can burn the photos. Fairy lights also gave similar ideas however a different way to highlight the theme or idea. The idea of camera experiments also gave more experimentation to the idea or theme.
Mood board
The mood board contains some of the photos that I liked the idea of for example the sparklers highlighting the subject and also looking at the camera focusing idea. As well as this I liked the idea of working with shadows in order to show something. I included the photo of the clock on fire as there was little work done with this idea and so I think it would be interesting to really look at to see what can be done.

1) Bettina von Zwehl - series Alina

She is a photographer born in 1971, Munich. Then moved to live and work in the UK, London with 19 series. These photos where taken with in a studio with a white background. The subjects are wearing white vest tops to accentuate there skin, hair and faecal expressions.
In both photos the subject is looking downwards with there hair stripped back away from the face. A reason for this could be to show there emotions which seem to be sad. This is indicated through there expression and body language. The fact that they are taken in a studio with artificial lighting allows control over how the lighting changes the mood of the photo.
2) Walead Beshty

Walead was born in the UK, London in 1976 however now lives and works in Los Angeles, CA in the United States.
In this photo the artificial lighting is the coloured lights. They span across the whole frame and create many lines and it acts like a zebra crossing and so the viewers eyes 'walk' across the image.
For this photo the textures are highlighted by the artificial lighting and filters. The textures are made more 3 dimensional with the use of the filters and angle of the light which can only be achieved through artificial lighting.
3) Richard Billingham - The Black Country

This is a book taken in the town of Cradley Health in the Black Country, West Midlands. He was born and grew up in the area shown, Billigham. They were all taken in 1997 to show the aesthetic.
Both of the photos have an orange tones to them which allows an atmosphere to be built in the photos. They also show the area and the paths and roads allow the viewers to move through the photo.
Option 02 - Still or moving figures
Definitions:
Still Figure - Or freeze frame photography, when a single frame of content shows repeatedly on the screen—"freezing" the action.
This shows lemon pieces being dropped in water and the effect of this. The black background really makes the lemon pieces stand out.
This is multiple freeze frames that have then be layered over one another. With a man throwing water in a waterfall to show the power of water.
Moving Figure - Or motion blur photography, the apparent streaking of moving objects in a photograph or a sequence of frames, such as a film or animation. It results when the image being recorded changes during the recording of a single exposure, due to rapid movement or long exposure.
This was taken on a long exposure and has capture a theme park ride in action. The lights bring this to life as they cause a streaming effect.
With this the camera is being moved at the same rate as the motorbike and therefore causing the background to blur.

I realised when do this mind map that a lot of my ideas really overlapped. I also realised that I had a lot of idea that have been done so many times and this would be interesting in how I would come up with my own original ideas where that are similar to the artist research and with out being to similar. I think it would be a little more difficult to expand upon and idea.
Mood board
For the mood broad I really focus on the movement of things and worked out that if I did this as my component I would definitely look more at the freeze frame photography and working with a fast shutter speed in capturing the movement of something. I really liked the idea of capturing the movement of the Human figure or having some part of the human anatomy with in the work.I really liked the idea of capturing dance or the movement of clothing to create a vast amount of drama.

He was born in 1894 and died in 1986 only being recognised as a photographer in 1963. He was a French photographer and painter born in Courbevoie, France and died in Nice, France.
This photo was taken using the freeze frame technique however the fast speed has caused the photo to distort.
For this photo the freeze frame captures what appears to be someone falling / diving into what seems to be a pool or fountain. It forms a feeling of anticipation with in the viewer as they are waiting to see the ending splash.
3) Persons Unknown, Tom Hunter

He is a photographer and film artist living and working in London. 1998 ‘Woman Reading a Possession Order’ from his series ‘Persons Unknown’ is shown below and is one of his most famous pieces. He was born in Dorset 1965 and is still producing photos to this day.
'Woman Reading a Possession Order'
This photo is taken from his 'Persons Unknown' series which highlights that there are everyday people who go through these struggles. You can see in the photo what is happening and the emotions that are formed in the view is out of sorrow and wonder of what is that family going to do now. Provoking the question, do they have anywhere to go.
'The Anthropologist'
This shows a man hard at work however he is very much confided to a tight space. This makes the view possibly trapped within the space as well.
4) Helena Almeida

She is a Portuguese artist that lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal. She is associated with the Body Art movement. Her series For Study for Inner Improvement (1977). In a sequence of black-and-white photographs, the artist appears to eat Yves Klein blue paint.
In the photos they are made using motion blur which is then emphasised through the use of the blue streak of paint. These streak also covers the women's face with in the photo, acting as a mask of a way of creating mystery.
The chosen criteria for Component 2
I have chosen for my component 2 artificial lighting as I had more of an idea of the theme that I could do however it may be interesting to also include some of the idea that I had for the still and moving figures as there is the possible idea of linking it within the idea.
